Firkel, who is currently enrolled in Chowan University's Criminal Justice Program, was on routine patrol in the early morning hours of October 2 nd when he smelled smoke near Sewell Street. After finding the source of the flames, Firkel alerted the three sleeping Chowan students inside the residence.

"You are being commended for your quick thinking, alertness and going above and beyond the call of duty," Mayor Lynn Johnson read in an official statement.

Less than a week before the fire, Officer Firkel pulled over a vehicle on High Street whose occupants were allegedly connected to a robbery and the possession of a sawed-off shotgun and handgun.
